GENERAL CONSTRUCTION
The General Construction class is the first step in the sequence order for the Construction Craft Laborers Apprentice program. The course introduces a wide variety of concepts, tools, and skills that are important to successfully begin a career as a Construction Craft Laborer. The apprentice receives instruction on the work and role of a Construction Craft Laborer, commonly encountered safety issues, safe hand and power tool operation and materials frequently used in construction.
COURSE
GENERAL CONSTRUCTION (GENCON) – 80 HOURS / 10 DAYS
This course teaches the basic skills every Construction Craft Laborer should know. The course is mostly hands-on learning with special emphasis placed on following proper procedures and developing safe work habits. Topics include:
- Oxygen/acetylene cutting
- Air tools (chipping guns, pavement breakers, etc.)
- Electric tools (reciprocating saws, roto-hammers, etc.)
- Power tools (powder-actuated, chainsaws, etc.)
- Sandblasting
- General and electrical safety
- PPE – hearing, eye, head, toe protection (including repetitive motion)
- Soil compaction
- Hearing conservation
- Material identification
- Small engine maintenance
- Heat stress

Upon completion of our Apprenticeship Program, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle various roles in the construction industry as a skilled and in-demand Laborer. Our courses are tailored to prepare you not just for today’s jobs but for the evolving demands of future construction projects. Your career can take many paths – becoming a Foreman or a site Superintendent or you may wind up starting your own construction company. Often times, a Journeyman Laborer will choose to focus on a specialty such as laying pipelines or hazardous material remediation or focus exclusively in constructing tunnels. The options are up to you.
