HAZARDOUS WASTE OPERATIONS
COURSE
HAZARDOUS WASTE OPERATIONS & EMERGENCY RESPONSE (HAZWOPER) (WORKER) – 40 HOURS / 5 DAYS
This course prepares students to work safely and productively on hazardous waste remediation projects and meets the training requirements for OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. Hazardous waste training requirements are established at the federal level whereas asbestos and lead training, in addition to federal regulations, states may mandate additional regulations with respect to asbestos and lead. HAZWOPER topics include:
- Hazard recognition
- Health effects
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Decontamination
- Remediation technologies
- Site safety and health plans
- Material handling and sampling
- Confined space
- Worker legal rights
Hands-on training includes:
- Demonstrating the ability to overpack 55-gallon drum using the V, Shim, and/or upside-down method.
- Demonstrating how to sample a liquid inside a drum using a glass thief and a composite liquid waste sampler (COLIWASA).
- Demonstrating the ability to collect soil samples.
- Demonstrating the ability to set up a staging area for barrels.
- Inspection and donning of full-faced air-purifying respirators (FFAPR)
- Inspection and donning of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Levels B and C dressing/obstacle course
- Level A dressing/obstacle course
- Decontamination field exercises
Upon passing the 25-question exam (80% or better), a Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust Certification Card will be awarded. If this class is taken at the Kingston training facility or the Utah training facility, the certification card is issued upon passing the exam. If this class is taken at any other training facility, the certification card will be mailed within several days to your home address on file. Hazardous waste certifications are valid for one year.
COURSE
HAZARDOUS WASTE RECERTIFICATION (REFRESHER) (WORKER & SUPERVISOR) – 8 HOURS / 1 DAY
Hazardous waste workers and supervisors must complete eight hours of HAZWOPER Refresher training within 12 months of the anniversary date of their previous HAZWOPER training. This course brings the active HAZWOPER worker or supervisor up to date on current regulations concerning hazardous waste remediation.
This class is only available online. Members need to contact their Local to schedule the class. Upon passing the 25-question exam (80% or better), a Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust Certification Card will be mailed within several days to your home address on file.Note: Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust does not offer the OSHA 8-hour HAZWOPER Supervisor (Initial) training. There are numerous OSHA authorized training organizations throughout the United States that provide HAZWOPER Supervisor training.
